Abstract

<PICT:0901724/IV(a)/1> In producing holes or recesses of a predetermined shape and depth in a block of resilient material, e.g. sponge rubber, foamed plastic, the block is compressed between a matrix plate and a die plate so that studs on the latter force portions of the material through apertures in the former, which portions are then cut away. In the apparatus shown a die plate 44 mounted on a spring-loaded plunger member 18, slideable on a guide member 17 engages a block B of the resilient material placed successively under two matrix plates 41, 42 on a table top 14 which have apertures spaced as shown to produce a block having nine holes. The plunger 18 is operated by means of a cam 22 and roller 23, the cam being fast on a spindle 24 which is rotated by a worm and wormwheel gearing 25 driven by a motor 26 through a series of belt and pulley reduction drives 28 and a chain and sprocket drive 31. A crank 32 on the spindle 30 coupled through a link 33 and arm 34 moves a cutting disc 40, rotated by a motor 38, horizontally to and fro along a guide rod 36 to alternately cut of portions of material forced through the apertures of the matrix plates 41, 42.
