Abstract

901,590. Packaging explosive material. NIEPMANN, F., NIEPMANN, O., and NIEPMANN, F., [trading as MASCHINENFABRIK FR. NIEPMANN KOMM.-GES.]. Aug. 17, 1960 [Aug. 18, 1959], No. 28582/60. Class 9 (2). [Also in Group XVII] A method for forming and packaging plastic explosive material particularly on a multiple web apparatus comprises forming the material into a rod by extrusion rolling and dividing it into rod lengths which are spaced apart and wrapped with a cut length of packaging or wrapping material, the wrapping material being fed in synchronism with the rod feed. In a preferred embodiment, plastic explosive from a container 1 is extruded through a nozzle 3 of circular cross-section into a rod form which drives a disc 5 which in turn drives a perforated disc 6 which is observed by a photo-cell 7 which varies the speed of a belt pulley controlling the wrapping feed according to the explosive feed. The explosive is severed into predetermined lengths by a wire controlled by rapidly operating electromagnets (not shown). The wrapping material which may be paper or transparent cellulose foil is fed by way of two wind-off devices to a conveyer belt 17 and to a folding tube 18, which consists of two separate parts. One revolution of the block roller 19 draws off a quantity of paper corresponding to the length of the cartridge including the paper coverings. This paper band is fed to a second wind-off device driven by the shaft 22, the device including a gluing roller 24 with two feed roller pairs 25 and 26 between which pairs is a revolving cutting device 27. The cut length of wrapping 21a is conveyed to transport rollers 28 and to the belt 17 where the severed cartridge 29 runs on to the wrapper. The wrapped explosive is then pressed along the glued seam by rollers 35 and then end-folding of the package is effected on the device of Fig. 1a (not shown). In a modification, Figs. 11 and 12 (not shown), the explosive mass to be wrapped is fed from one conveyer belt to a second belt which runs more slowly, thus causing the explosive to bunch up. Subsequently it passes under three rollers and then to two profiled rolls which give the required cross-section.
