Abstract

<FORM:0901537/IV(a)/1> An uncrimped moving monofil, tow or thread of a wholly synthetic material is subjected to a vibrational stress while being stretched to several times its original length. Application of the vibrational stress may be combined with a steam treatment or thermal fixing treatment. The vibrations may be produced mechanically, hydraulically, or electrically, and frequencies from 100 c.p.s. to within the ultrasonic range may be used. The vibratory stroke may be adjustable. The length of the monofil, tow or thread exposed to the vibratory treatment may be varied. A monofil, tow or thread may be drawn under tension from a nozzle which is subjected to a vibratory movement. Alternatively, monofils, tows or threads may be stretched on a drafting frame under constant tension (in contrast to the constant elongation usually employed), a thread-brake device being used to effect the vibratory movements. In a preferred method, Fig. 1, a monofil, tow or thread passes from a bobbin 1 through a thread guide 2 to the supply mechanism 3, of a drafting frame, through the roller system 4, over a vibrating roller 5, through drafting rollers 6 to an identical system 6, 7, 8, and is wound up at 9 by means of a traversing mechanism 10. Alternatively, Fig. 2, a vibrating roller 5 is used between a drafting roller system 3, 6, but the guide rollers 4 are omitted. This enables the length 1 of the monofil, tow or thread being treated to be readily varied. Alternatively the length 1 can be varied, and the vibrating roller dispensed with, by stretching the filaments in a drafting frame provided with a feeding roller and a stretching roller, the surface velocity of the stretching roller being non-constant and being several times greater than that of the feeding roller. In an example, polycaprolactam filaments are so treated. Treated filaments show an enhanced uniformity of crosssection, and improved elasticity, tensile strength, and resistance to breakage on repeated flexing.
