Abstract
901,246. Burnishing crank-shafts. FOOTE. BURT CO. Nov. 4, 1959, No. 37419/59. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A shoe for a burnishing head comprises a holder 27 supporting at least one roller, each or the roller having a continuous helical rib on the surface extending from one end to the other, the roller or rollers being of such length and disposition that the length of rib extends to a slightly greater width than the width of the holder and the holder being adapted for pressing against the circular work by a clamping finger 16. In burnishing crank-shaft bearings where the burnishing tool cannot be moved axially of the work two such shoes, Fig. 1, each having a pair of rolls 40 with ribs 41, Fig. 3, are attached to a supporting assembly for a known type of crank-shaft lapping machine. The support assembly comprises a cylinder 1 carried by a slide 11 projecting downwardly through spaced guide arms 12 attached to a fixed bracket 13, the slide 11 being lockable in the required vertical position by clamping the arms 12 together. The rollers 40 are pressed into engagement with the work by a piston 2 through piston-rod 3, a toggle linkage and the fingers 16 which are pivoted to the supporting structure. The rollers 40 are backed by roller bearings 36 and are axially retained by a shoulder 43 on a detachable side plate 38 of the shoe. In a modification, Figs. 7 and 8, the rollers 47, 49 which are conical extend over a little more than half the width of the holder and are so disposed that a little more than the whole width of the holder is covered by the ribs 48 and 50. The degree of approach of the shoes is limited by adjustable stops, Fig. 9 (not shown).
