Abstract
900,875. Valves. SIERRA ENGINEERING CO. Nov. 12, 1959, No.38384/59. Class 135. A check valve incorporates a housing 10, Fig. 3, between a flange 35 of which and a ring 351 is clamped a diaphragm 20, with its inner periphery secured to one end of a sleeve 22, the interior of which engages a bead 19 in the housing 10. The other sleeve end embodies a flange 26 and four spiders with ports 29 therebetween, the flange 26 being engaged by an annular knife edge 33 on a bonnet 30 bolted to the housing. A rubber or plastic valve closure 40 has a central boss 41 with a stem 42, a grooved part 43 of which is located in a hub 44 of the sleeve 22; the boss periphery is joined to a corrugation 46 which supports an annular member 47, with an inturned skirt 48 of thicker material than the corrugation, the circumference of the skirt normally abutting the flange 26 to close the valve. When fluid in the inlet 49 impinges on the closure 40 the parts 47, 48 move to the position shown in dotted lines to open the valve due to flexure of the corrugation 46; an increase in fluid pressure causes a greater opening of the valve by flexure of the member 47 and skirt 48 in a downstream direction. In a modification, the annular member and skirt may be of graduated thickness and are connected to the boss by a double corrugation; the annular member and skirt may flex sequentially as the pressure increases. In another modification, the central boss 65, Fig. 5, which has a valve stem opening 66, is surrounded by an arcuate annular member 67 connected by a corrugation 68 to an arcuate skirt 69.
