Abstract
A process for the preparation of aromatic alcohols comprises heating an aromatic compound containing one or more monohaloalkyl groups with a concentrated aqueous solution of an alkali or alkaline earth metal acetate until all the organically bound halogen is split off from the aromatic compound, and saponifying the resulting product with a strongly basic compound of an alkali or alkaline earth metal. In the examples, 2,4-dimethylbenzyl chloride, p-xylylene dichloride and 1,3-di-methyl-4,6-bis-chloromethylbenzene are heated at 105-120 DEG C. in the presence of molten sodium acetate trihydrate and the resulting acetates hydrolysed with concentrated sodium hydroxide solution. The aqueous solution of sodium acetate, after removal of the alcohol and sodium chloride, may be recycled for heating with the haloalkyl aromatic compound. The haloalkyl aromatic compound may be mono or polynuclear and may be further substituted by alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, methoxy or alkylamino groups.
