Abstract

900,536. Retractive switches. SNEYDKYNNERSLEY, T. R. April 14, 1960 [Jan. 19, 1959], No. 1913/59. Class 38 (5). [Also in Group XXXI] A device mounted on the rear bumper of a motor vehicle to give warning of the presence of an obstruction comprises a pair of plastic strips 15 and 16, hinged together at 18 and constrained to the position shown in full lines in Fig. 3 by a spring 19, the inner strip being secured by rivets 21 to a base-plate 12 secured to the bumper 10 by bolts 13 with the interposition of a rubber backing 14 between the plate and the bumper and a sheet of copper 20 between the strip 15 and plate 12. Electrical contacts 24 are provided on the strip 15 and are connected by conducting strips 22 and 23 respectively to terminals 25 and thence via an isolating switch, warning lamp and/or buzzer to a battery terminal, the sheet 20 being earthed through plate 12 and bolts 13. When an obstruction is encountered the device is constrained to the position shown in broken lines and electrical contact is established between either or both of the elements 24 and the sheet. 20. One or two such devices may be fitted. In a modification, the strips 15 and 16 are of steel and appropriate insulation is provided between the strip 15 and sheet 20.
