Abstract

Alkyl or aryl halosilanes are prepared by reacting an alkyl or aryl halide with silicon in the presence of a catalyst comprising a copper-silicon alloy containing 5 to 25% by weight of silicon or ferrosilicon (including impurities), the catalyst alloy and silicon reactant having been sintered at temperatures up to 1250 DEG C. in a reducing or inert atmosphere or in a vacuum before reacting with the halide. An accelerator such as zinc or aluminium may be included in the alloy. The proportion of copper is preferably 1 to 50% by weight of the total silicon. A particularly preferred catalyst alloy is one which corresponds to the formula Cu3Si. The silicon reactant may also be in the form of ferrosilicon. The examples describe the preparation of mixtures of methylchlorosilanes and of phenylchlorosilanes; the Specification also mentions methyl bromide and isopropyl chloride as reactants.ALSO:A copper-silicon alloy used as catalyst in the preparation of organohalosilanes (see Group IV (a)) contains 5 to 25% by weight of silicon or ferrosilicon including the usual impurities, the remainder consisting of copper and optionally an accelerator, e.g. zinc or aluminium. A particularly preferred alloy corresponds to the formula Cu3Si(12.8% Si). The alloy is itself sintered with the silicon used for the preparation of the silane, at temperatures up to 1250 DEG C. in a reducing or inert atmosphere or in a vacuum. This silicon reactant may also be ferrosilicon. In the final mixture, the copper preferably comprises 1 to 50% by weight. The proportion of aluminium in the catalyst alloy should not exceed 10%; the zinc is referred to in proportions of around 1% to 7%.
