Abstract

Ferrous hydroxide and ammonium salts are obtained by adding ammonia liquor simultaneously with waste acid pickle liquor to a heated vessel operating under vigorous agitation at a temperature above 50 DEG C. but not exceeding 150 DEG C. under pressure conditions sufficient to prevent boiling. The reacted liquor is removed from the vessel and the ferrous hydroxide separated, e.g. by centrifuging. The remaining iron in part of the reacted liquor is precipitated as ferric hydroxide by aeration and the supernatant liquor is evaporated to obtain ammonium salts. The other part of the liquor from which ferrous hydroxide has been removed is recycled to the waste acid pickle liquor. The ammonia and waste acid pickle liquor may be added in stoichiometric proportions and the acid may be sulphuric, phosphoric, hydrochloric, or nitric acid. The ammonia liquor may be ammonia effluent liquor from a coke oven scrubbing process or it may be an aqueous solution of synthetic ammonia.
