898,799. Automatic moisture control systems. SOUTH AFRICAN IRON & STEEL INDUSTRIAL CORPORATION Ltd. Sept. 10, 1959 [May 29, 1959], No. 30973/59. Class 38 (4). [Also in Group XL (b)] The moisture content of sinter mix is maintained constant by measuring the flux of neutrons slowed to thermal energies by the mix, correcting the measurement for thickness or density variations by measuring the flux of gamma rays transmitted or backscattered by the mix, comparing the measurement with a reference and using any difference to operate a watering valve. Fast neutrons and gamma rays from a radium beryllium source enter the sinter bed and backscattered gamma rays and thermalized neutrons are detected by a Geiger and boron trifluoride counters respectively. If mechanical means keep the thickness constant over a long period, the gamma-ray detector may be used to check the distance of the neutron detector from the sinter bed by changing from connection aa to bb.
