Abstract

Phenols and organic bases are separated from mixtures with hydrocarbons, such as mineral or shale oils, coal tar distillate or lignite tar distillate, by (1) extracting the phenols with an alkaline agent until the mixture contains a residual amount (e.g. 4%-10%) of phenols substantially corresponding to the amount required to form molecular compounds with the bases present, (2) removing, with acid, the bases from the partially dephenolised mixture and (3) removing with an alkaline agent, the residual phenols.
