Abstract
898,282. Stuffing-box substitutes. PARKERHANNIFIN CORPORATION. March 27, 1961, No. 11115/61. Class 122 (5). [Also in Group XXIX] A soft rubber sealing ring 54 for use between relatively reciprocating cylindrical members 36, 40 comprises in cross-section a base 80 with oppositely-diverging inner and outer lips 82, 84 separated by a channel 88 ,the lip 82 forming with the base 80 an inwardly sloping surface which is formed with annular ridges 100 and is outwardly bevelled at 112 so that the first point of contact with the member 36, when the ring 54 is received thereon, is formed by the smallest diameter ridge which is adjacent the bevelled portion 112. In operation the lips are forced against the members 36, 40 by pressure fluid entering the channel 88. Extrusion of the ring is prevented by a leather washer 90. The ridges 100 are sawtoothed in cross-section and permit the re-entry in the cylinder of fluid which may have passed by the ring 54 and accumulated in the space between the latter and a secondary wiper ring 58. The ring 58 has also a V-shaped cross-section and is formed with opposite inner lips 66, 74, the latter extending beyond the gland 40 and serving to wipe dirt off the member 36. Sealing pressure of the lips 66, 74 is increased by the provision of a relieved surface 78 therebetween.
