Abstract
897,994. Paints. OLIN MATHIESON CHEMICAL CORPORATION. July 23, 1958 [Aug. 2, 1957], No. 23698/58. Addition to 897,993. Class 95 [Also in Group IV(a)] Drying oils such as linseed oil are rendered thixotropic for coating compositions by the addition of an alkylene diamine-modified copolymer of an unsaturated hydrocarbon and a glyceride oil of polyunsaturated fatty acids such as a vegetable drying or semi-drying, or marine oil particularly copolymers of cyclopentadiene or dicyclopentadiene with linseed or soybean oil modified by reaction with ethylene diamine. 1-10% of the thixotropy agent is incorporated in the drying oil by heating, e.g. to 100‹-130‹C. In an Example (11) 12 parts of alkali refined linseed oil is heated with 1 part of a hexane diamine modified dicyclopentadiene-linseed oil copolymer at 85‹C. for about 1 hour to give a thixotropic composition.
