Abstract
Benzene is benzole is purified by crystallising a major proportion of the benzene, separating the crystals, partly thawing by washing with an aqueous liquid and returning the thawed benzene after separation to the crystallisation. The benzole may have been hydrofined or acid washed to remove thiophene and lower and higher boiling materials may have been separated by distillation. The crystallisation mother liquors may be distilled to separate a benzene fraction which is also returned to the crystallisation. The crystallisation is preferably effected by mixing with a cold, immiscible liquid, e.g. aqueous calcium chloride solution, and causing the mixture to flow with turbulence. The Provisional Specification also refers to crystallising at least 75% of the benzene and thawing 10%-50% of the crystals and also to the separation of p-xylene from xylole.
