Abstract
Thermoplastic resins are made by copolymerizing in a suspension medium, e.g. water, a mixture of a styrene, an itaconic diester and acrylonitrile which contains from 3 to 20% by weight of acrylonitrile. Styrene monomers specified are styrene, o-, m and p methyl styrenes and 2,4-, 3,4- and 3,5-dimethyl styrenes. Itaconic diesters specified are the dimethyl, diethyl, di-n-propyl, diisopropyl, dibutyl, diisobutyl, dicyclohexyl, ethyl propyl and ethyl cyclohexyl itaconates. The suspension polymerization in water may be carried out with the aid of a suspending agent, e.g. an alkaline earth carbonate, phosphate or silicate, talc, starch, gelatin, salts of polyacrylic and polymethacrylic acids, salts of styrene-maleic anhydride copolymers, polyvinyl alcohol, pectin, alginates, methyl hydroxyethyl and carboxymethyl celluloses, gum acacia and gum tragacanth. The examples describe the use, as a suspending agent, of a slurry of calcium hydroxyphosphate in water which contains sodium, dodecylbenzene sulphonate. Polymerization may be catalyzed by peroxidic compounds such as benzoyl, lauroyl and di-tert. butyl peroxides and tert. butyl perbenzoate.
