Abstract
A mixture of acrylonitrile and vinylidene chloride are polymerized in the presence of a polymerization initiator and a mixture of water and an aliphatic alcohol containing not more than three carbon atoms, the amount of acrylonitrile being chosen so as to give a copolymer precipitate containing a major proportion of acrylonitrile. A redox initiator, e.g. ammonium sulphate plus potassium bisulphite is preferred, while ethanol is the preferred alcohol. Mixtures of 25 to 45 volumes water with 75 to 55 volumes alcohol are preferred. The copolymers are soluble in acetone to form solutions which may be wet or dry spun to form threads.
