Abstract
897,562. Grippers. HARRIS-INTERTYPE CORPORATION. Dec. 11, 1959 [Dec. 19, 1958], No. 42168/59. Class 100(2) In a sheet gripping device having a pair of relatively movable and co-operating gripping elements one of the elements has a hardened gripping surface comprising a multiplicity of peaks distributed throughout the surface and valleys surrounding the peaks, the peaks being produced by etching of selected areas of the surface and having tops arranged in substantially the same plane. The impression cylinder 10 of a rotary printing press carries a gripper shaft 11 on which is rotatably mounted a gripper finger 12 which co-operates with a gripper post 13. A dog 16 is secured to the shaft 11 and a spring 18 arranged between abutments on the dog and on the finger urges the latter in a clockwise direction (as shown) about the shaft 11, such rotation being checked by further, co-operating abutments 20, 21 on the finger and dog respectively. The shaft 11 oscillates to open and close the gripper; when the gripper is closed it bears resiliently on a sheet S being gripped owing to the spring 18. The post 13 is etched on its upper surface to provide a multiplicity of minute peaks each of which has a plane top and ragged sides. The etching is 0À010 inches deep and the tops are approximately 0À005 inches wide. The post is prepared for etching by use of a light-sensitive resist. The tops of the peaks may be ground after etching in order to ensure that they lie accurately in the same plane. The gripping surface may be formed on a thin plate which is then secured to the post.
