Abstract
<PICT:0897299/III/1> Sponge-like material which is impregnated with a detergent and which is especially suitable for use in shampooing, is obtained by (a) compressing portions of the sponge material to a predetermined degree, (b) submerging the material in this compressed form beneath the surface of a detergent solution, (c) allowing the compressed material to expand while still submerged, (d) removing the impregnated material from the solution, (e) compressing the impregnated material to a predetermined degree to remove excess absorbed solution, and (f) allowing the sponge-like material to re-expand to its original size; thereafter the sponge-like material may be dried. The material to be impregnated may consist of natural sponge, sponges made from natural or synthetic rubber, or from foamed synthetic resin. A suitable apparatus for producing such impregnated sponges comprises a tank 1 containing impregnating liquid; pieces of sponge material are compressed between rollers 2 and 3, and then pass beneath the surface of the liquid on to conveyer 7 which passes the pieces, once they have re-expanded to their original size, between rollers 10 and 11, whereby excess solution is removed.
