Abstract
Precipitated calcium carbonate suitable as a rubber filler is produced by carbonation of milk of lime with a CO2-containing gas in two stages, in the first of which the carbon dioxide is at a partial pressure of 0,2 atmospheres or less and in the second at a higher concentration. When a gas flow of 2 to 3 litres/minute per litre of a milk of lime containing 80 gm./litre of CaO is used, the preferred partial pressure of CO2 in the first stage is in the range 0,10 to 0,20 atmospheres, whilst in the second stage it is between 0,40 and 1,0 atmospheres. A suitable temperature for the milk of lime at the start of the carbonation is 20 to 25 DEG C. Examples illustrate the improved dispersibility in a rubber mix of the CaCO3 produced by the two-stage carbonation over CaCO3 produced by one-stage carbonation, the addition of stearic acid and of calcium stearate being discussed. Specification 562,544 is referred to.
