Abstract
896,708. Repairing leaks in pipes. ADAMS PIPE REPAIR PRODUCTS. Sept. 7, 1959, No. 30503/59. Class 99(2). [Also in Group XXV] A pipe clamp device, e.g. for sealing a leak in a pipe 10, Fig. 1, comprises a flexible strap 12, preferably of non-corrosive, rust-resistant metal, having an inturned loop 14 at each end, a clamp member 15 retained within each loop and juxtaposed opposite the other clamp member, and a bolt 16 interconnecting the clamp members 15; each clamp member 15, Fig. 3, has an elongated base portion 18 with leading and trailing edges 32 and 33 respectively, a curved bottom surface 29, an upper convexly curved surface 34 merging with the bottom surface 29 at the leading edge 32, and a strap force-directing surface 30 merging with the upper surface 34 and defining with the bottom surface 29 a tapered section terminating in the trailing edge 33. Upstanding integrally from the base portion 18 is a boss portion 19 having a back face 23, to seat the head or nut and washer of the bolt, and an opening 25 for receiving and positioning the bolt, and the surface 30 when projected defines a plane intersecting the bolt axis B between the back face 23 and the leading edge 32, so that the tapered section of the base portion 18 acts asgainst an overlying portion of the strap 12 to retrain the clamp member from turning about the leading edge 32 when the clamp members are drawn towards each other upon tightening of the bolt. The boss portion 19 of each clamp member 15 extends through a port in the respective loop 14 of the strap 12 and the opening 25 in one of the members 15 is in the form of a slot open at the top, that member 15 being provided with a rearwardly extending portion 26 for retaining the bolt 16 in position. The surface 29 on each clamp member may be recessed to receive a pad of material such as a rubber composition resistant to deterioration in the presence of soil. A gasket member 13 for covering the leak in the pipe may be bonded to the strap 12. In a second embodiment, Fig. 5 (not shown), the back face of each clamp member is disposed at the trailing edge thereof and the upper surface of the base portion is grooved to receive the lower portion of the bolt shank.
