Abstract

896,543. Internal shoe-drum brakes. WILLYS MOTORS Inc. Feb. 25, 1960 [March 6, 1959], No. 6627/60. Classes 103 (1) and 144 (1). A wheel assembly for a motor vehicle comprises a non-rotatable spindle housing 18, a spindle 34, a wheel member 50 rotatable on the housing 18 (roller bearings 55 and 56), a brake drum 80 with an annular axial flange 86, and with a hub 84 releasably connected to the spindle 34, means (bolts 92) holding the brake drum flanges 86 to wheel member 50, the brake drum 80 forming with the wheel member 50 a closed annular chamber 94 on the outer side of member 50, sealing means 60 and 68 to seal the chamber 94 being provided between member 50, housing 18, spindle 34 and the brake drum 80, the braking means 112, 118 being mounted in the chamber and on the backing plate 108 attached to the spindle housing 18. The spindle 34 is supported on ball-bearings 38 and is connected by a universal joint 40 to the outer end of a wheel-drive shaft 42. Joint 40 is protected by a flexible boot 44 and bearing 38 is protected by an annular seal 46 against dirt and road dust.
