896,144. Drilling muds. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO. Ltd., BILLET, M. G., GIBSON, J., and PETHRICK, S. R. Jan. 19, 1961 [Jan. 27, 1960], No. 2945/60. Class 85. A drilling mud contains minor proportions of a C 12 to C 18 fatty acid and a waterimmiscible viscous hydrocarbon or oxygenated hydrocarbon material containing at least 20 C atoms per molecule. The fatty acid may be oleic acid, linoleic acid, or linolenic acid. The hydrocarbon material may be coal tar. One or more rosin acids may also be present in small quantities.
