Abstract
Catalysts suitable for fluorination (see Group IV(b)) contain chromium oxide. The catalyst may be the granular hydrous chromium oxide obtained by the action of ammonium hydroxide on an aqueous chromium salt solution; the partially dried precipitate can be cubed. In other variations: the hydrous chromium oxide may be mixed with a minor proportion of chromium chloride and pelleted; ammonium hydroxide can be reacted with a mixed chromium chloride and aluminium chloride solution, and the precipitate used in the form of granules, cubes or pellets; or the chromium oxide may be supported on alumina, e.g. by impregnating porous alumina with aqueous CrO3 solution, drying, and reducing at elevated temperatures in an atmosphere of hydrogen.ALSO:Chloropentafluoroethane is prepared by heating CF3CCl3, CF3CFCl2 or a mixture thereof with hydrogen fluoride at 200 DEG C.-500 DEG C. in the presence of a chromium fluorination catalyst. The reaction pressure may be atmospheric or sub- or superatmospheric. The fluorination catalyst may be granular hydrous chromium oxide precipitated by the action of ammonium hydroxide on aqueous chromium chloride or other chromium salt solution; the precipitate may be used in the form of cubes prepared from the partially dried product. Mixed and supported catalysts containing chromium oxide are also described (see Group III).
