Abstract
A process for the manufacture of foamed cellular polyurethane materials by interacting an organic polyisocyanate with a hydroxyl group-containing material such as a polyester, polyesteramide, or polyether and water is characterized in that there is incorporated therein, in addition to the said reactants at least one compound containing a halogen or phosphorus atom and also at least one isocyanate reactive group in the molecule. In Examples (1) foamed materials are prepared by reacting (1)(a) a mixture of a polyester from pentaerythritol, 1:3-butylene glycol, adipic acid and phthalic anhydride; water, an octyl-cresolethylene oxide condensate and 2:3-dibromopropanol with (b) a diphenylmethane diisocyanate composition obtained by the phosgenation of crude diamino diphenylmethane. (2) in a similar process the 2:3-dibromopropanol is replaced by tetrabis(hydroxymethyl) phosphonium chloride. The flame-resistance of the products is determined. Other halogen-containing compounds mentioned are 2-chloroethanol, 2:3-dichloropropanol, 2,3-dichlorobutanol, 1:4-dihydroxy- 2:3-dichlorobutane, 2:2:2-trichloroethanol, chloral hydrate, 2:3-dichloropropionic acid, 2:3-dichloro-2-methylpropionic acid, 3:4:5:6-tetrachlorophthalic acid, hexa-chloro-endomethylene tetrahydrophthalic acid, chlorinated anilines, N-methyl anilines, toluidines, N-methyltoluidines and the corresponding bromo and iodo compounds. Tris-(hydroxymethyl) phosphine oxide is an alternative phosphorus compound. Specification 733,624 is referred to.ALSO:A process for the manufacture of foamed cellular polyurethane materials by interacting an organic polyisocyanate with a hydroxyl group-containing material such as a polyester, polyesteramide or polyether and water is characterised in that there is incorporated therein, in addition to the said reactants at least one compound containing a halogen or phosphorus atom and also at least one isocyanate reactive group in the molecule. In examples foamed materials are prepared by reacting (1) a mixture of a polyester from pentaerythritol, 1 : 3-butylene glycol, adipic acid and phthalic anhydride; water, an octylcresol/ethylene oxide condensate and 2 : 3-dibromopropanol with a diphenylmethane diisocyanate composition obtained by the phosgenation of crude diamino-diphenylmethane; (2) in a similar process the 2 : 3-dibromopropanol is replaced by tetrakis-(hydroxymethyl) phosphonium chloride. The flame-resistance of the products is determined. Other halogen-containing compounds mentioned are 2-chloro-ethanol, 2 : 3-dichloropropanol, 2 : 3-dichlorobutanol, 1 : 4-dihydroxy-2: 3-dichlorobutane, 2, 2, 2-trichloroethanol, chloral hydrate, 2 : 3-dichloropropionic acid, 3 : 4 : 5 : 6-tetrachlorophthalic acid, hexachloro-endomethylene tetra-hydrophthalic acid, chlorinated anilines, N-methyl anilines, toluidines, N-methyltoluidines and the corresponding bromo and iodo compounds. Tris-(hydroxymethyl) phosphine oxide is an alternative phosphorus compound. Specification 733,624 is referred to.
