Abstract
895,479. Cellulose derivatives. HEBERLEIN & CO. A.G. March 16, 1960 [May 21, 1959; Sept. 7, 1959; Dec. 7, 1959], No. 9294/60. Class 2(2) Cellulosic materials, especially fibres, yarns, threads, woven and knitted fabrics and goods of cotton, regenerated cellulose and cellulose derivatives, e.g. cellulose acetate, are treated with an ionising radiation able to penetrate the material substantially without inducing radioactivity therein, at a low dosage, and the material is heated during and/or after the irradiation to effect cross-linking directly or indirectly (i.e. by bridge formation) so as to obtain a material of improved mechanical properties. A low dosage is defined as insufficient to cause physical degradation of the cellulose, e.g. loss of tensile strength, and is generally from 10<SP>3</SP> to 10<SP>7</SP> Roentgen, preferably from 5 X 10<SP>4</SP> to 10<SP>6</SP> Roentgen. The ionising radiation is preferably γ radiation or X-rays but # radiation may also be used. Co<SP>60</SP>, Cs<SP>137</SP> or fission products of U<SP>235</SP> may be used as sources of γ radiation. Irradiation of the material may be effected in the presence of atmospheric oxygen, or in the absence of air or oxygen (e.g. in vacuo or in an inert gas) for a period from 10 seconds to 4 hours. The material may be heated at from 50 to 80‹ C., preferably 70 to 80‹C. in air or 50 to 60‹ C. in vacuo, immediately after irradiation or several hours to several days after irradiation. Prior to irradiation, the material may be treated with a chemical agent to effect topochemical change, suitably an aromatic compound with an aliphatic substituent having a secondary carbon atom in the o-, m-, or pposition to the point of reaction of the aromatic compound with the cellulose chain. Suitable compounds are o-, m- or p-substituted benzene carboxylic acids or alcohols or their derivatives; p-isopropyl benzoyl chloride is specified. The material may alternatively be treated prior to irradiation with a chemical agent for protecting against irradiation. In this case a total dose of 10<SP>6</SP> to 10<SP>7</SP> Roentgen may be irradiated into the protected material, and heating during or after irradiation may be from 30 to 50‹ C. Cysteine, cystine, phenols (e.g. pyrogallol) and methane sulphonyl chloride are specified protective agents. Material treated by the process of the invention may have a moisture content of at least 20%, preferably 30 to 40% based on the dry weight. Examples describe the treatment of fine fabrics made from relatively high-twisted yarns, e.g. voile and marquisette, and of rayon and cotton goods. Materials so treated are characterized by cross-linking between the cellulose molecules and show increased dimensional stability and resistance to shrinking and lower solubility in cuprammonium solutions, as compared to the corresponding untreated material. Specification 895,478 is referred to.
