Abstract
The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:0895422/IV (b)/1> and water soluble salts thereof where R represents an alkyl radical of 1 to 12 carbon atoms or a trimethyl radical which is also formed with the benzene ring in the position ortho to the tertiary nitrogen atom, X is hydrogen, methyl or ethyl and n is an integer from 3-12. The esters may be prepared by sulphating the corresponding hydroxyalkyl compounds, e.g. with 100% sulphuric acid. Examples describe the sulphation of 4 - amino - N - ethyl - N - o - hydroxy - hexyl - and pentyl - aniline, 4 - amino - 3 - methyl - N - ethyl and N - dodecyl - N - o - hydroxybutyl - aniline, 4 - amino - N - hexyl - N - o - hydroxyhexyl - aniline and 6 - amino - 1 - (o - hydroxyhexyl) - 1, 2, 3, 4 - tetrahydroquinoline. The last mentioned compound is obtained by reacting 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline with o -bromo-hexyl acetate, hydrolysing off the ester group and introducing the 6-amino group by the method disclosed in J.A.C.S. 73 3100. The Provisional Specification refers more broadly to sulphuric esters or salts of compounds of the general formula <FORM:0895422/IV (b)/2> where R may additionally represent a hydroxyalkyl group containing 3-12 carbon atoms, R1 represents an alkyl group containing 1-10 carbon atoms and is substituted by 1 or 2 hydroxy groups, X may additionally represent methoxy or ethoxy and R2 and R3 represent hydrogen atoms or together represent a phthaloyl radical which may be substituted by a carboxylic or a sulphonic acid group. The compounds are of use as photographic developers, particularly in colour photography. Specifications 673,091 and 723,171 are referred to.
