Abstract

In the thermal decomposition of H2SO4 alkylation sludge (containing titratable acidity equivalent to at least 75% H2SO4) into SO2, and coke, by mixing the sludge with a stream of coke particles moving in a closed cycle, as described in the parent Specification, bituminous coal is mixed with the sludge prior to mixing with coke, and the temperature does not exceed 650 DEG F. Bituminous coal is coal containing at least 25% volatile, should be of particle size not in excess of 100 microns, and is used in an amount equal to 5-25% by weight of the sludge.
