Abstract
Dressed natural fur skins, e.g. dressed natural Persian lamb skins, are decoloured by immersing them in a bath, maintained at a temperature above 0 DEG C. but below human body temperature, containing formic acid in a concentration of 5%-10% by weight and a solvent for the pigment released from the hair by the formic acid, and then washing the skins to remove the formic acid and solvent therefrom. The solvent, which is preferably a dioxane with a small proportion of an alcohol, e.g. isopropyl alcohol, may contain a wetting agent, e.g. an ethylene oxide-octyl cresol condensate, and sodium chloride in sufficient quantity to prevent swelling of the skin due to the action of the free acid thereon. The skins are preferably immersed in the bath for 12-48 hours at about 30 DEG C. and may be washed in a bath comprising sodium chloride and sodium sesquicarbonate at 25 DEG C. The skins may subsequently be dyed.
