Abstract
A size composition for glass fibres comprises an aqueous emulsion containing 1 to 5% by weight of a water-insoluble, film-forming oilmodified saturated alkyd resin, 0,1 to 5% of an anchoring agent and 0,1 to 1% of a hydrophilic colloid. Optional ingredients include a plasticizer for the film-former, a glass fibre softener and lubricant, and a surface active agent. Specified components of the compositions are alkyds soybean, oi ticica or coconut oil modified reaction products of a glycol and phthalic acid; anchoring agents Werner organo-chromium complexes in which a trivalent chromium atom is co-ordinated with an acyclic carboxylato group, e.g. stearato chromic chloride; stearylsilsequioxane or a silane or polymerization or hydrolysis product thereof or their halide derivatives wherein the anchoring agent has 1-3 hydrolysable groups and, attached directly to a silicon atom, an organic group containing not more than 8 carbon atoms and having an unsaturated C=C linkage in the chain, e.g. vinyltrichlorosilane, vinyltriethoxysilane, divinyldichlorosilane, allyltriethoxysilane, styryltrichlorosilane or their silanols or siloxanes derived therefrom: colloids gelatin (preferred), bone glue, chrome glue, starch, polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, casein, alginates, methyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose and carboxymethyl cellulose: plasticizer the isomeric diglycidyl ethers of bis-phenol: softeners and lubricants a polyglycol ester of a fatty acid; a condensation product of tetraethylene pentamine with a fatty acid, e.g. with stearic acid: surface active agent an aryl alkyl polyether alcohol. Specifications 719,466, 748,391 and 800,518 are referred to.ALSO:A method of producing yarns of glass fibres comprises coating the fibres with a size composition specified below, gathering a plurality of the coated fibres together in endless bundles, drying at about room temperature, processing the dried bundles by twisting and plying to form yarns, and heating the yarns to cure the coating. The size composition is an aqueous emulsion containing 1%-5% by weight of a water-insoluble, filmforming oil modified saturated alkyd resin, 0.1%-5% of an anchoring agent and 0.1%-1% of a hydrophilic colloid. Optional ingredients include a plasticizer for the alkyd, a glass fibre softener and lubricant, and a surface-active agent. Specified components of the compositions are alkyds-soybean, oiticica or coconut oil modified reaction products of a glycol and phthalic acid: anchoring agents-Werner organo-chromium complexes in which a trivalent chromium atom is co-ordinated with an acyclic carboxylato group, e.g. stearato chromic chloride; stearylsilsesquioxane or a silane or polymerisation or hydrolysis product thereof, or their halide derivatives wherein the anchoring agent has 1-3 hydrolysable groups and, attached directly to a silicon atom, an organic group containing more than eight carbon atoms and having an unsaturated C=C linkage in the chain, e.g. vinyltrichlorosilane, vinyltriethoxysilane, divinyldichlorosilane, allyltriethoxysilane, styryltrichlorosilane or their silanoles or siloxanes derived therefrom: colloids -gelatine (preferred), bone glue, chrome glue, starch, polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, casein, alkinates, methyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose and carboxymethyl cellulose: plasticizer-the isomeric diglycidyl ethers of bis-phenol: softeners and lubricants-a polyglycol ester of a fatty acid; a condensation product of tetraethylene pentamine with a fatty acid, e.g. with stearic acid: surface active agent-an aryl alkyl polyether alcohol. Specifications 719,466, 748,391 and 800,518 are referred to.
