Abstract

An aqueous or dry adhesive comprises bone glue and dextran in which 86% to 97% of the glucosidic linkages are 1, 6 linkages and the molecules are substantially linear, the amount of dextran being 5% to 10% of the total weight of bone glue and dextran. The molecular weight of the dextran may be between 15,000 and 40,000. The adhesive may also comprise 5% of a plasticizer, computed on the total weight of solids present. Specified plasticizers are-sodium or potassium nitrate or thiocyanate, sodium acetate or lactate, calcium, magnesium or zinc chloride, urea, thiourea, sorbitol, glycerine, ethylene, diethylene or propylene glycol. The adhesive may also comprise up to 5% of its weight of ground glass or silica, mica and/or a pigment. The aqueous adhesive may contain 50% by weight of solids.ALSO:An aqueous or dry adhesive comprises bone glue and dextran, in which 86 to 97% of the glucosidic linkages are 1, 6 linkages and the molecules are substantially linear, the amount of dextran being 5 ot 10% of the total weight of bone glue and dextran. The molecular weight of the dextran may be between 15,000 and 40,000. The adhesive may also comprise 5% of a solid or liquid plasticizer, computed on the total weight of solids present. Specified solid plasticizers are:- sodium or potassium nitrate or thiocyanate, sodium lactate or acetate, calcium, magnesium or zinc chloride, urea, thiourea and sorbitol. Specified liquid plasticizers are:- glycerine, ethylene, diethylene or propylene glycol. The adhesive may also comprise up to 5% of its weight of ground glass or silica, mica and/or a pigment. The aqueous adhesive may contain 50% by weight of solids and may be prepared by soaking the bone glue in cold water, heating the mixture at 155 to 165 DEG F. until it becomes smooth, adding the dextran and, if desired, the plasticizer and heating the resulting mixture at 155 to 165 DEG F. for 10 to 15 minutes. A substrate, such as lithographic paper or wallpaper, may be coated with the aqueous adhesive, dried and then remoistened to restore the adhesive properties. The adhesive is stated to have improved tack, grab and resistance to attack by bacteria and enzymes, compared with bone glue adhesives containing no dextran.
