Abstract

892,624. Making ball-point pens. FEHLING, H. R. Aug. 20, 1958 [Aug. 28, 1957], No. 27134/57. Class 83 (2). In making a ball-point pen, the clearance between the ball 6 and its seatings 7, 8 is increased by a constricting force applied to a circumferential zone of the nib exterior located to the rear of the plane tangential to the rear of the ball 6 and perpendicular to the axis of the nib housing. The constricting force may be applied by hammering, pressing, rolling or swaging and the operation may be carried out at the same time as a ball-retaining operation. Dies for hammering or pressing the housing are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The lip of the die 1 of Fig. 1 may be chamfered at 4 and contact the nib 3 in a circumferential band 5 or altenatively may press on a circumferential line. The die 1 of Fig. 2 having a bore 9 with taper less than that of the nib portion 3a, applies pressure along a line 10 or a convex zone between the portions 3a and 3b of the nib.
