Abstract
The invention comprises a compound having the formula <FORM:0892078/IV (b)/1> in which R1 is = O, = H(OH), or = H(OAc), the -OH or -OAc groups being a -orientated, and R2 and R3, which may be the same or different, are -H or -Ac, where -Ac represents an acyl residue derived from an aliphatic carboxylic acid having not more than 6 carbon atoms and a process for the preparation thereof, which includes the steps of treating an 18,20b -epoxy-5b -pregnan-11-one having the formula <FORM:0892078/IV (b)/2> (in which R4 is =O or =H(OAc), where OAc is and a -orientated acyloxy radical derived from an aliphatic carboxylic acid having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms) with zinc chloride in solution in acetic anhydride, and after isolation of the product thus obtained reacting the same with an alkali to yield an 18,20-dioxygenated 5b -pregnan-11-one having the formula <FORM:0892078/IV (b)/3> where R4 is =O or =H(OH), the OH group in the latter case being a -orientated. Illustrative products of the invention are 3a ,18,20b -trihydroxy - 5b - pregnan - 11 - one, 3a ,18,20b - triacetoxy - 5b - pregnan - 11 - one, 18,20b - dihydroxy - 5b - pregna - 3,11 - dione and 18,20b -diacetoxy-5b -pregna-3,11-dione.
