Abstract

In a method of carrying out a number of operations on tubes &c., the tubes are moved pivotally about a vertical axis transverse to their longitudinal axes, and are moved along the vertical axis so that the ends of the tubes after each pivotal and vertical movement occupy positions which lie on a spiral path, and the operations are carried out in these positions. The top tube 2 in a stack is passed to position 2a on the top disc 1 of a number of coaxial rotatable discs, and is clamped on the disc to allow the ends to be milled by cutters 4, 5, which may be fed into the work, or if the work is carried by rollers on disc 1, the work may be fed in turn to cutters 4, 5. The tube is then allowed to drop through a slot in the top disc until it rests on the second disc, and is secured thereon. This disc is rotated to bring the work to position 2b, where the ends of the tube are chamfered by tools 6, 7. The tube then drops to the next disc and is moved to position 2c where end caps 8, 9 are fitted and a pressure medium is introduced in order to pressure test the tube. The tube is rotated on this disc, or on lower discs during the pressure testing, in order to allow the operations on the following tubes to be carried out. The end caps will eventually be removed, preferably at a position below position 2c, and the tube is passed to a lower disc and pivoted to position 2d, where threads are cut by machines 10, 11, and coup - lings may be screwed on to the ends of the tubes. Further positions 2e, 2f may be provided, and means associated with the lowest disc discharge the finished tube.
