Abstract
891,836. Generating combustion products under pressure. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Sept. 16, 1960 [Oct. 5, 1959], No. 31939/60. Class 51 (1). In combustion equipment for example of a gas-turbine engine, of the kind comprising a flame tube disposed within an outer air casing, the flame tube comprises sections which overlap each other so as to form cooling air passages therebetween, the passages being formed by corrugations around the edge of one tube section which are in contact with the edge of the other tube section. The passages each diverge circumferentially and converge radially in the direction of flow of the air stream. The flame tube shown comprises overlapping sections 46, each of which comprises a frusto-conical upstream portion 50 and a cylindrical downstream portion 48, the upstream edge of the portion 50 which overlaps the portion 48 of the adjacent upstream section being formed with corrugations comprising troughs 56 and crests 54. The troughs 56 are in contact with the outer surface of the portion 48 and are secured thereto by spot-welding at 60. The downstream edge of the portion 48 is formed with axially extending slots 70 to permit circumferential expansion and contraction. The troughs 56 are of arcuate shape so that the air inlet passages 62 formed between the two sections diverge circumferentially in the direction of air flow and at the same time converge radially in the direction of air flow as seen in Fig. 4, due to the frusto-conical shape of the upstream portion 50 of the downstream section. The flame tube has a dome 28 at its upstream end, the dome having perforations 78 for the flow of primary air therethrough, the air being guided by vanes 80.
