891,799. Nuclear reactors. A.E.I.-J. THOMPSON NUCLEAR ENERGY CO. Ltd. Aug. 19, 1960 [July 31, 1959], No. 26387/59. Class 39(4) In a nuclear reactor wherein neutron absorbent material in a form having fluid properties is located above the reactor core and under emergency conditions is allowed to fall into a duct in the core, the duct is provided with a plunger, which normally rests at the bottom of the duct and supports the neutron absorbent material after it has been allowed to fall into the duct, and with a rod cable or the like connected to the plunger so that the plunger can be moved up the duct to remove the neutron absorbent material. In Fig. 1 a duct 2 extends into a channel in the reactor core and under emergency conditions neutron absorbing pellets are dropped into the duct from a reservoir above the reactor core. To recover the pellets the duct 2 is raised until its flanged upper end is level with the inner wall 7 of the reservoir, and the plunger 4 is then raised to return the pellets to the reservoir.
