Abstract
891,749. Controlling helicopters. HILLER AIRCRAFT CORPORATION. Aug. 29, 1960 [Aug. 31, 1959] No. 29681/60. Class 4. A rotary wing aircraft includes a fuselage, a main rotor having a plurality of rotor blades 12, a pilot operated collective pitch control member 20 movably mounted on the fuselage and a tail plane 34 pivotally mounted on the fuselage and tiltable about an axis transverse thereto, and means connecting the tail plane to collective pitch control member 20 to tilt the tail plane simultaneously with collective pitch adjustment. Tail planes 34 are pivoted about a shaft 35, carried in bearings 36 fixed to the tail boom 3, and are connected by an arm 37 and link 38 to collective pitch control member 20. By pivoting the tail planes to the position in which they offer the least resistance to the relative wind WC, pitching of the tail 3 will be reduced and the amount of rotor tilt available for altitude control will be increased.
