Abstract

891,701. Towing winches. DRACONE DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. May 12, 1958 [May 20, 1957], No. 15935/57. Class 78 (5). Ship's diesel 1 drives D.C. generator 2 which supplies current to motors 3 and 5, of which motor 3 drives towing winch 4, and motor 5 drives propeller 6 to drive the ship. The torque applied by motor 3 to winch 4 enables slack in the towing rope to be taken up; whilst excessive stress in the rope causes the rope to pay out to relieve the stress and, at the same time, to drive motor 3 as a generator. The power so generated is used by motor 5 to drive the ship by giving extra propulsion to propeller 6. Alternatively steam may be used, the towing winch 4 driving or being driven by a turbine so that the ship's steam engine can use up the surplus energy generated by the winch.
