Abstract
Polyvinyl alcohol filaments are made by wet spinning a solution of polyvinyl alcohol having an average degree of polymerization of at least 1,000 containing up to 50% by weight, based on the weight of polyvinyl alcohol, of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, sodium alginate or gum arabic or a combination of two or more of these substances. The spinning solution may also contain sodium sulphate, and may be spun into a conventional coagulating bath at a suitable temperature, and the filaments subjected to wet heat treatment at a temperature above 100 DEG C. for at least 1 hour in a saturated aqueous sodium sulphate bath and then acetalized, formalized or benzalized. Filaments so made have enhanced dyeing properties.
