Abstract

891,305. Centralized dictation systems. AUTOPHONE Ltd. Feb. 24, 1959 [March 5,1958 No. 7021/58. Class 40 (4). In a centralized dictation system, different operations of a dictating machine are controlled by signals of different frequency transmitted from a substation. Keys are depressed to transmit the different frequencies but as a guard against failure to key the release signal, a short release signal is transmitted automatically when the handset is replaced. Three dictating machines are available to seven or more substations. Substation.-A transistor oscillator TS1 is tuned by an inductor L1, either with capacitors C1, C7 alone or with capacitors C1, C7 and one of a number of capacitors C2 to C5, C9. Transmission of the six frequencies is controlled by keys 1 to 6. At the end of a call, key 6 is depressed to transmit the release signal. When the handset, including microphone M and receiver R, is replaced, switch 10 connects negative battery to the oscillator through capacitor COND and the oscillator transmits another release signal to line during the charging period of capacitor COND. Capacitor COND is discharged through resistor R13 when the switch 10 is up. Central station.-In Fig. 2, DM denotes the recording coil of a free dictating machine allotted for the next cell. When the handset is lifted at a substation, relay L takes a first step and marks the corresponding contact of the c-bank in finder HS by disconnecting ground. Relay A, corresponding to the dictating machine shown, pulls up and is followed by J and D. The stepping magnet HSM steps the switch until C pulls up in series with L as the calling line is found. The line a, b is extended to the dictating machine and at contact c5 the: line is connected to the A relay of the next free machine. Relay L takes the second step and guards against further calls. If all the machines are busy, relay G pulls up and buzzer BZ gives a tone signal to the calling line. The line a, b may be extended to another dictating machine over contact FC whatever the state of relay C, but the control for FC is not described.
