Abstract

Homopolymers of acrylamide or an alpha-alkyl substituted acrylamide or copolymers containing a preponderating amount of such an acrylamide, which polymers are free from imide groups, are rendered water-insoluble by heating with a mineral acid or an organic sulphonic acid. Amide polymers specified are polyacrylamide, polymethacrylamide, an acrylamide-methacrylamide copolymer and an acrylamide-methyl acrylate copolymer. Acids specified are sulphuric, hydrochloric, phosphoric, hydrofluoroboric and benzene sulphonic acids. The heating is preferably carried out at temperatures of 60 DEG -120 DEG C. Amide polymers free from imide groups may be prepared either by polymerization of the amide in aqueous solution at a temperature below 80 DEG C. and at a pH of 4-9, or by polymerization of the amide in an organic solvent at a temperature below 100 DEG C.
