Abstract

890,426. Flame proofed polymers. DOW CHEMICAL CO. June 23, 1960 [July 1, 1959(2)], No. 22037/60. Class 2(6) [Also in Group V] A process for flame-proofing thermoplastic polymers of olefins or of alkenyl aromatic monomers comprises forming a concentrate of ammonium bromide having a particle diameter of not over 50 microns in a polyolefin having a molecular weight of from 1,500 to 10,000, or in an alkenyl aromatic polymer having a solution viscosity of from 0À5 to 6À0 centipoises, or in an emulsion latex of a polymer of an alkenyl aromatic monomer which latex is then spray dried, and then incorporating the concentrate into a compatible polyolefin or polymer of an alkenyl aromatic monomer in an amount sufficient to provide 15% ammonium bromide in the product. The compatible polymer may be the same as that in the concentrate or may be of higher molecular weight. The various polymers may be derived from ethylene, styrene, alpha-methyl styrene, o, m, or p-methyl styrene, nuclear halo-substituted styrenes and methyl styrenes, ethyl styrene, vinyl xylene, and mixtures with each other or with minor amounts of divinyl benzene, methylmethacrylate or acrylonitrile. The invention is applicable to the production of film or solid mouldings or cellular articles and Example II illustrates the production of a foamed, flame-proofed polystyrene. Optional ingredients disclosed are corrosion inhibitors such as diethylamine salt of octylphenyl esters of phosphoric acid and N-alkyl-amino butyric acid, Stoddard solvent, solubilizers such as polyoxyethylene sorbitan monolaurate, stabilizers, titanium dioxide, dibutyl tin oxide, dicumyl peroxide and calcium salt of tall oil acids. Specification 661,002 is referred to.
