Abstract

890,364. Silencers. MOREAU, R. Dec. 23, 1959 [Dec. 29, 1958; Nov. 23, 1959], No. 43750/59. Class 7(2). A silencer for internal combustion engines comprises a casing 4 divided into a plurality of intercommunicating compartments by means of double-walled staggered baffles each comprising a perforate wall 3 and an imperforate wall 7 separated by a short distance. As shown, the two walls are connected by a part-annular metal segment 8. The baffles are spaced by rings 5 and fixed in position by two longitudinal rods 9 passing through holes in the walls 3, 7. The inlet and outlet pipes for the silencer have cap members at one end which connect to the casing 4, the inlet pipe having a flange at the other end for connection to the engine. In another embodiment the walls 3, 7 are mounted and fixed obliquely in grooves in an inner pipe concentrically surrounded by the casing. The baffles may be helically displaced with respect to one another, e.g. by a fifth of a revolution and suitable thermal and acoustic insulating material may be inserted between the inner pipe and the casing.
