Abstract
890,086. Erecting portable derrick masts. CABOT CORPORATION. Feb. 8, 1960, No. 4407/60. Class 78 (4). [Also in Group XXV] The telescopic sections 8, 10, Fig. 1, of a derrick are extended and retracted by an hydraulic ram 32, 36. Pawls 76, Figs. 3, 5, hold the upper section 10 in its raised position by riding over and engaging the upper surface of shoulders 94 as the derrick is extended. In the form illustrated the pawls are urged outwardly by springs 50. To disengage the pawls, the upper derrick section is raised until a lever 64, Fig. 3, abuts a stop 100 and rotates a shaft 60 and an arm 58, Fig. 6, anti-clockwise. Thus, levers 56 are moved inwards to compress springs 50 and withdraw pawls 76 through connetting-rods 72. Simultaneously a rod 66 moves to the right in Fig. 6 until a notch 68 engages a member 70 to latch the pawls in their retracted position. As the upper section of the derrick approaches its fully retracted position the bar 66 abuts and is raised by a stop 104, Fig. 1, thus releasing pawls 76 which move out in readiness for the next extending movement of the derrick.
