Abstract
889,757. Ventilating buildings. BRUCE, H. H. June 11, 1958 [March 14, 1957; March 27, 1957; April 10, 1957], Nos. 8434/57, 9996/57 and 11722/57. Class 137 [Also in Group XI] Beneath a constructional floor 9, 10, 11 and in a trench 1 of a building site 2 lengthwise ducts 7 are defined by spaced inverted trough floor beams 5 resting on a concrete base 3 and covered by concrete 6 and a thermal insulating layer 8, e.g. of hardcore, "no fines" concrete, or lightweight concrete. Electric heating cables 12 preferably thermostatically controlled rest on the floor of the ducts at one end of which is provided an inlet for air, the other end having an air outlet communicating with a fan and trunking which delivers the air to the space or spaces to be heated. In a further embodiment, Figs. 2 and 3, the duct 15 and an air passage 17 are defined by insulating panels 16 at the upper part of, for example, a corridor. The duct 15 is closed at its ends except for an air inlet 18 and an air outlet 19 connected to a fan 20 and has suspended within it a run of concrete 22 provided with heating cables 23 and having thermal insulation 24 at the top and sides. Cooling capacity may be provided during hot weather by the circulation of water through pipes in the ducts, or by the circulation of air over the heat storage material previously cooled at night. The heating elements may comprise hot water pipes or the like. The fan, which may be controlled by a thermostat and started and stopped at predetermined times by a time switch is preferably associated with air flow control means such as a damper controlled thermostatically or by hand.
