Abstract

A component R1R2AlAOR3 wherein R1, R2, R3 are alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl and A is a divalent aromatic hydrocarbon radical, is used in conjunction with a compound of a transition metal of groups IV-VI of the Periodic System as a polymerization catalyst. Solvents used may be aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbons or a mixture thereof or the monomer to be polymerized, petroleum ether (b.p. 120 DEG C.) and benzene being specified. Also specified are Et2Al-C6H4OEt, TiCl3, TiCl4 and VCl4. Specification 877,050 is referred to.ALSO:Hydrocarbon monomers are polymerized with a Ziegler-type catalyst comprising R,R2Al-AOR3 wherein R1, R2, R3 are alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl and A is a divalent aromatic hydrocarbon radical, e.g. Et2AlC6H4OEt. The Al compound is used in conjunction with a transition compound preferably as follows:- (a) TiCl3-to give isotactic polypropylene or rubbery polybutadiene; (b) TiCl4-to give solid polyethylene or rubbery isoprene; (c) VCl4-to give isotactic polystyrene, crystalline polybutadiene or crystalline polyisoprene. In the examples, propylene is polymerized using petroleum ether (b.p. 120 DEG C.) and benzene as solvents, and methanol for isolating the polypropylene of which 77-82% was insoluble in ether. Specification 877,050 is referred to.ALSO:p-Ethoxyphenylaluminiumdiethyl is prepared by reacting diethylaluminium bromide with p-ethoxyphenyllithium in ether. Specification 877,050 is referred to.
