Abstract

889,277. Electroluminescence. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Oct. 2, 1958 [Oct. 24, 1957], No. 33303/57. Class 39(1) [Also in Group XXXVI] A switching device, particularly for use with an electroluminescent display device as described in Specification No. 888,433, comprises a layer 12a of electroluminescent material having a set of conductors 11a, 13a disposed on each face thereof in directions transverse to each other, and a plurality of photo-conductive cells each associated with the intersection of a different pair of conductors, each of the cells being provided with connecting leads 19, 20 by which they can be connected to external circuits 21 whereby a plurality of circuits can be selectively controlled, each by a different photo-conductive cell when energised by illumination thereof by fluorescence of the electroluminescent material at the associated intersection of conductors under the influence of signals applied to the conductors. The device can comprise a supporting plate 10a of glass on one face of which the set of conductors 11a, which are at least partially transparent, is printed, and on the other face of which the electrodes 17, 18 of the photo-conductive cells can be printed. The electrodes of the photoconductive cells can be formed by indium soldered to the plate by a tin/indium solder, and a layer of cadmium sulphide 16 can be provided as a photo-conductive layer overlying each pair of electrodes. The thickness of the plate can be so thin compared with the spacing of the intersections of the conductors and cells that fluorescence of the electroluminescent material at any one intersection of conductors is only effective to illuminate the associated cell, the illumination which would otherwise affect the adjacent cells being totally internally reflected within the plate. The cell circuits of the switching device shown in Fig. 2 can be energised by A.C. and used for controlling the crossed-conductors electroluminescent display device of Fig. 1. The ratio of the capacity of the two cells concerned to the capacity of the electroluminescent element involved should not exceed <SP>1</SP>/ 5 which is achieved by employing as thin a layer of phosphor as possible. As shown in Fig. 5 the conductors of the arrangement of Fig. 2 can be selected by the use of two further devices 22 and 23 constructed in accordance with the invention.
