Abstract

Block polymers are produced by polymerizing a C2-C8 alpha-olefin which does not have a side chain substituent adjacent to the double bond with a catalyst system which comprises a dispersion in an inert liquid hydrocarbon of a subhalide of a Group IVa, Va or VIa metal in combination with an activator, then, in the absence of the first monomer, continuing polymerization with a different alpha-olefin of the abovementioned type whereby it polymerizes as an extension of the previously formed polymer, terminating the polymerization and separating from the reaction mixture a block polymer of which the molecules consist essentially of a single section of one polyolefin joined to a single section of the other polyolefin. Alpha-olefines specified are ethylene, propylene, butene-1, 3-methylbutene-1, 3,3-dimethylbutene-1, 4-methylpentene-1 and 3,4-dimethylhexene-1. Metal subhalides specified are titanium, zirconium, and vanadium trichlorides chromium dichloride and molybdenum tetrachloride, and the corresponding iodides and fluorides. Activators specified are aluminium, zinc and magnesium triethyls, triisopropyls and triisobutyls, aluminium alkyl halides, n-butyllithium, methyl sodium, butylsodium, phenylisopropylpotassium, lithium, sodium and lithium aluminium hydrides, sodium and potassium borohydrides and Grignard reagents. Hydrogen may be present during the polymerization of either or both of the olefins. The examples describe the preparation of ethylene-propylene block polymers using a titanium trichloride-aluminium triethyl catalyst.
