Abstract
888,864. Mixing and grinding appliances. FRENKEL, W. S. Aug. 25, 1958 [Aug. 23, 1957], No. 26691/57. Classes 59 and 86. A mixing or grinding appliance as arranged for continuous discharge, Fig. 1, comprises a rotor 1 having a diminishing helical thread 7 defining helical grooves 6, rotatable in a stator 2 having an inlet port 3, and discharge ports in an end plate 11. The stator has axial vanes 9 defining grooves 8 and forming a frusto-conical interface 10 with the diminishing helical thread 7. When the rotor is rotated so that the thread conveys material from the inlet to the discharge ports, there is transfer of material from grooves 6 to grooves 8 in such manner as to effect mixing and homogenizing. In a modification, Fig. 3, suitable also as an extruder, the screw thread has a section of opposite hand. In another embodiment for batch mixing, Fig. 2, the rotor is vertical and the material is loaded into the funnel-like extension 13 of the stator. There are no discharge parts and the material undergoes simultaneous 2-way transfer between the grooves. The bottom of the rotor may be spirally grooved and co-operate with radial vanes in the bottom of the stator. Valve means may be provided at 15 or 16 for discharging when mixing is complete. Passages 17, 18 may be provided for a heating or cooling medium. In a modification (Fig. 4, not shown), the apparatus is vertical and the stator open at the ends, and adapted to be mounted in a vessel as a stirrer. In another modification (Fig. 5, not shown), the inner component is the stator and may be integral with the bottom of the vessel. In a further modification (Fig. 6, not shown), the rotor is hollow with inner and outer helical threads and co-operates with an interior and exterior stator. The apparatus may also be arranged as a stirrer with a rotor in disc form having central inlet ports and with spiral grooves co-operating with radial grooves in the stator which may be formed in the bottom of the vessel or pan (Figs. 7, 8, 9 not shown). Adjustment of the rate of mixing may be effected in all arrangements by axial displacement of the rotor.
