Abstract

888,715. Sliding window operating mechanism. HILL BROS. GLASS CO. Ltd. April 27, 1960 [May 7, 1959; July 14, 1959(2); Oct. 27, 1959], Nos. 15651/59, 24120/59, 24121/59, and 36348/59. Class 20(3) [Also in Groups XXIV and XXV] Two window or door panels 14, 15, Fig. 1, slidable in parallel planes, each have respective screw and nut operating mechanisms 16, 17 on respective sides of the main frame and operated from means disposed on the exterior of the lower horizontal frame member 13 and coupled to the screws 16, by transverse shafts 20, Fig. 7, having separate operating handles or being coupled alternately to one operating handle 29, Fig. 4, by dogs 28 on the inside of the handle tubular shaft axially movable to engage the dogs 28 alternately with teeth 26, 27 on the inner and outer shafts 24, 25 respectively mounting bevel gears 22, 23 meshing with the bevel gears 21 on shafts 20, Figs. 4 and 7. The shafts 20 and the alternating gearing mechanism mounted on a plate 40 angularly adjustable by screw and slots 38, 39, the gears 19, Fig. 1, being similarly adjustable. Each panel has top and/or bottom rollers 30 in housings 32, Fig. 5, adjustable laterally by screw and wedge mechanism 34, 33, to adjust the roller to the side member of the frame. A mask 47, Fig. 10, movable with the panel 15 and a fixed cover member 46 hide the shaft 16 from view through the slot provided for the connector 45 between the nut 17 or panel 15. A synthetic resin nut 17 is provided with a safety catch 44. A sleeve (not shown) on the shaft 16 where it enters the horizontal frame member prevents seepage of liquid from the vertical to the horizontal frame members.
