Abstract
Naphthalene is obtained from a feedstock containing alkylnaphthalenes by hydrodealkylation at above 1,200 DEG F. in the presence of hydrogen and a catalyst containing 5%-25% of chromia on a high purity, low sodium content, gamma alumina. The feed preferably boils in the range 400 DEG F.-600 DEG F. and is rich in polycyclic aromatics and may be a fraction of a heavy petroleum reformate, a thermally or catalytically cracked light cycle oil or an aromatic extract. Dealkylation is preferably effected at about 1,350 DEG F. 0.5-2 wt./hr./wt., 100-1,000 p.s.i. and a hydrogen to hydrocarbon mol ratio about 7 : 1. The naphthalene may be recovered by fractionation or crystallisation and may be further purified by treatment with hot clay at 500 DEG F. High boiling products may be recycled.
